A Letter to the Editor by Anastasia (Av2 TUES, 2008-2009) - About 200 words

Dear Editor:

Once again, gender violence is on the news. This time, fortunately, the aggressor failed to kill his partner thanks to the prompt action of two citizens.

Reading your article, I wondered how many women are lucky enough to be saved and, what is more, why these cases happen.

Despite the measures taken by the government, both to help victims and punish aggressors, the alarming frequency of domestic violence events shows that they are not enough to prevent them. Therefore, further legal reforms on this matter as well as more investments in psychological assistance, are urgently needed to save so many women in danger. We should also consider education as a key point to address such a sensitive issue. An education based on human dignity, which also implies raising awareness on equality, respect and tolerance. And I believe that the family, the media and the educational system are the proper means to convey all these values to children from an early age.

I dream with a society capable of living together in peace. If we commit ourselves to that, we will surely be able to construct a new society where human rights, love and rationality prevail over violence.
