Obama's President-Elect Speech Outline by Av2 MON Students (Course 2008-2009)
Note-taker: Teacher (Please, if there is some mistake, let us know! Thanks)
Check out the speech here

I'm going to copy what I believe was the plenary consensus on the outline of Obama's speech.

Intro (from If there is... to change has come to America).
Message: Doubting America? Well, change has come.

Body

Thanks Part (from I just received... to it belongs to you) - Some people thought the first paragraph on McCain deserved a space of its own in the outline, because it was not exactly a thank you.
There are 3 ingredients in this part, plus an introduction (a bridge) to next point, the 4th ingredient, the people: McCain and Republicans, his party, his family, the people (el pueblo).

The Victory
(from I was never the likeliest... -- could also include the previous sentence, for its double function -- This is your victory)
Devoted (and dedicated!) to the people who achieved it (the people)

Present Situation (or Why part to include under Victory?)
(From I know you didn't do this... to and alliances to repair)

Future Lying Ahead
(From The road will be long. to ... as one people)
This has 2 parts (the first gets to calloused hand by calloused hand). The first is about the idea "It's not going to be easy". The second is the plan: "We must keep up what we started" and the idea of empathy (fundamental for good teamwork!)

Home Politics
(Let us resist... I will be your President too.)
Criticism to the Bush Administration tied in with the greatness of Our Nation and empathy towards Republicans.

Foreign Politics
(And to all those... can and must achieve tomorrow)
Message to the goodies and the baddies: we are powerful, not only for our military and economic power but as moral leaders of the world (we are not what Bush made of us and we'll fix that).

Historic Overview (100 years) in the form of a Prayer presented through the eyes of an elderly black woman
(This election had ... how America can change. Yes, we can)
Here is the analysis of each "Yes we can" line with some sociocultural comments by Michelle
The first is an intro. It envelopes all that's coming up next.
The second makes reference to women's oppression (feminist struggle, but he doesn't mention the suffragettes, probably because that's associated to white women's struggle) and the progress of women achieving the right to vote.
The third is the Depression - the Dust Bowl (remember Steinbeck and that amazing photographer, Dorothea Lang?) with the achievement (solution) of the New Deal - secont time it's a problem-answer point. See what I mean?
The third is WWII and Democracy winning the war (problem-answer).
The fourth is the (nonviolent, incidentally) Civil Rights Movement (black struggle), with Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks and all the people who took part in nonviolent direct action in different towns. "We Shall Overcome" (problem=racism; answer=success of Civil Rights Movement).
The last part selects a few other events connected to the most recent history and the image of an 106-year-old woman casting her vote making use of the latest technology becomes a summary of all the previous overview, all the hardship didn't prevent us from succeeding in making progress. So we can see that progress is possible along time, but only if we make and effort and endure the hardship.

End of Body

Ending
(America, we have come so far. ... God Bless the USA)
Achievements - A "Let's keep it up!" cry (grito). We have a role to play - the American Dream is the defence of Truth - moral leaders again. Closing sentence: we are blessed by God, so our mission is blessed.
