Writing a Letter to the Editor by Javier Martín Gutiérrez (Av2 Mon, 2008-2009)
A Minor Problem
Jan 22, 2009
Dear editor:
An article in your Jan 22 issue addresses the issue of global warming. Your media coverage on this is welcome, but readers should not be led to think that global warming is an unpredictable even which does not depend on our lifestyle.
As a matter of fact, your approach is rather optimistic. You start out by stating that the concentration of greenhouse gases is not important enough to pose a threat and that the predictions are not justified from the scientific point of view. The rest of your commentary does not tackle the way we should solve this problem in case this risk comes true. It is clear we are running out of time and we have to intervene in the matter.
According to a recent survey, exhaust fumes are the most important source of pollution. Because of that, we should use public transport as often as we can instead of our own car. Moreover, worldwide governments should enforce laws to protect our environment, preventing fumes from toxic factories. The benefit from that would be to stop all those cities from being permanently covered by a cloud of pollution. Besides, we should refrain from heating our Earth, otherwise the Arctic and Antarctic oceans will slowly melt, causing floods in many low-lying parts of the world.
I would like to conclude by saying that we all need to understand part of the solution to this severe problem is in our hands. Unless we begin to protect our environment, our Earth resources will be running out. We need to think of future generations. It is really worth making the effort.
Yours,
