Explaining the difference between 'client' and 'customer' by Charo (Avanzado 2 Mon, 2009-2010)
Hi M.,
I've done some research about the use of 'customer' and 'client'. I asked P., who is a South African woman who teaches me English at work (I receive a telephone call every week that lasts about half an hour) and that's her answer. I wanted to share it with all you.
Have a nice day
Charo

Hi Charo!
I just opened your mail. The difference between client or customer I will explain as follows:
Customers: Generally, these are individuals who buy items/services from ordinary shops/ factories/ restaurants/ car hire companies, etc. (But they can also be clients)
For example: Most of McDonald's customers are between the ages of 20 & 30. They largely prefer the Big Mac burger & Coca Cola deal.
Clients: Clients can be either individuals or companies who pay/ sign contracts with professionals for services or goods, for instance: Architects, designers, big companies, accountants, estate agents, clothing manufacturers and lawyers all have clients.
For example: The biggest client of "Long Life Potatoes PTY LTD", is the McDonald's food chain.
There are also exceptions:
The client of a doctor is called a patient.
The client of a hotel is called a guest.
etc
Does this answer your question?
Let me know if you need more info.
Best Wishes
P.
