Writing a Book Review by N. (Av2 Tues, 2009-10) - About 175 words

The Absolutely true Diary of a Part-Time Indian is the first young novel of Alexie's, published in 2007 in twelve different countries. Sherman Alexie is a Seattle writer, poet and filmmaker, who has written a number of stories about American Indian life. This novel is a semiautobiographical chronicle, based on Alexie's own experiences during his adolescence on a reservation.

The protagonist is called Junior, a bright 14-year-old high school Native American boy who was born with water on the brain. He's regularly the target of bullies and also loves basketball and cartooning. The daily struggles of reservation life and some tragic deaths in his family would be unbearable without the humor and resilience of spirit with which Junior faces the world. Besides, he soon realizes that he has to get away of the reservation and attend a white school twenty miles away.

It is an amusing, entertaining and at the same time serious novel, which shows how tough life is in an Indian reservation.

This is a powerful book you should definitely read.
