Book Review, by Antonio Apreas (Av2 Mon, 2010-11) – About 180 words

Tales of the Unexpected is a selection of sixteen short fiction stories by the famous Roald Dahl, and all of the tales have an unpredictable ending.

The writing is compelling, and the twists in the tales are smoothly executed. In fact, you never know whether the tyrant or the tyrannized will win in the end. None of the stories leave you indifferent. I felt anger reading "Galloping Foxley". In contrast, "Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel's Coat" put a smile on my face and "Lamb to the Slaughter" left me open-mouthed.

Roald Dahl is one of the most successful and well-known children's books writers but, even if you are an adult, this is a highly recommendable book, especially if you are an English student who has decided to read it in original version. Another advantage is the short tales allow you to read a complete story even if you don't have plenty of time. Moreover, you can read a tale today and go on next month with the second or fifth one!

You'll come across enjoyable entertainment with unexpected endings – most probably, you might be unable to stop.
