How I Met Your Mother, an Oral Presentation by Elena, Cristina Ga. and Juan (Av2 Mon, 2010-11)

After telling their classmates about the different episodes they watched, this group shared some useful languages are from the following episodes:

doc 2x04 Ted Mosby Architect
doc 2x13 Columns
doc 4x04 Intervention
doc 5x08 The Playbook
doc 5x13 Jenkins

They also asked people to get together in small groups and improvise a conversation using as many of these sentences! The group using the highest number of sentences would win. It was fun and also funny!

Notice there is a morphosyntactic structure typical in US American English (and similar to Galego Spanish): We just had our first fight (We've just had our first row, UK), the worst boss I ever had (the worst boss I've ever had, UK). "Awesome" is typical in US American English. In British English the use is restricted to events like sunsets! This difference in use makes British people tease US Americans (A British person can say: "For people from the USA a hamburger can be awesome. For us, a sunset is awesome). "Rock" the verb, as in "Rock your world" (or "It rocks", "You rock my world"), means whatever or whoever move you deeply, you like it/him/her/them, they're cool. The opposite is "Suck", as in "It sucks", meaning, you don't like it.

Listen and Repeat! Listen external link to all of these sentences (a warm thanks to the Talking People podcast!)

  • Dear Resident, the time we spent together, however long it was, means the world to me. I would love to see you again but unfortunately I cannot. You see, I am a ghost. I can only materialize once every decade, on the anniversary of my death. I chose to spend my one day among the living with you, sweet Resident. Perhaps we will meet again, in another decade, provided you keep your figure. Until then, all my love from the beyond. Barney.
