A Proposal for Developing Cycle Lanes in Madrid, by Irene Llorente Fernández (Av2 Tues, 2010-11) – 288 words
The aim of this proposal is to make politicians and citizens aware of the importance of cycle lanes in a city. I am convinced that if there was a proper cycle lane in Madrid, connecting the most important places with train stations, people would use bicycles instead of cars more frequently.
The advantages of this measure are obvious.
Reduction of traffic-related air pollution
Many people suffer breathing and other health-related problems because of pollution. The risk of dying increases when the nitrogen dioxide level rises by 10 micrograms per three square metres of air, which happens when there are too many cars driving at the same time. Council would also invest less money in the cleaning and maintenance of building fronts if pollution were reduced.
More time for sleeping and more money in our pockets
Traffic congestion does not allow us to forecast travel time accurately. That is why drivers have to get up earlier, which results in more stressed and frustrated drivers. What we also need to consider is that using bicycles instead, would save us time and money in terms of finding parking space and paying for it. Definitely, using bicycles to get to work would make drivers happier.
Healthier bodies
Cycling is one of the most complete physical exercises. It minimizes the risk of coronary heart disease and assures trimmer and toned muscles. Apart from this, pursuing cycling builds your stamina level, which helps you carry out your day-to-day activities more effectively.
Finally, a strong point in favour of cycling is that you won't spend more money at that gym you actually never go to!
I hope you will meditate this proposal and start bringing up this issue in relevant places in your community.
