To the Editor:
Letter referring to the article news item "Budget cuts could affect government departments," published in your newspaper on April, 20th, 2011.
As budget cuts have been affecting the daily life of the Spanish citizens, I think it is very important that these measures affect government departments in the same way. From my point of view, government department budgets are excessive and unreasonable in this time of economic and social crisis.
I agree with cutting the salary of Spanish ministers and MPs, as well as with minimizing the costs of trips and travel expenses, but in my opinion, there are additional ways of reducing costs. For example, cutting down the number of counsellors or advisers who ministers hire when they reach office. If ministers were properly trained in the area they are going to manage, they would need fewer advisers. In Spain, there are some resounding cases of ministers that do not even have a university degree. How can a person who does not have the necessary training and education make decisions that affect millions of people?
Our future presidents should take this issue into consideration when choosing their ministers. I really think we need people who actually know about the real problems of education, health or the environment, not people who only know about his or her political party. If we had better trained people in our government, we would reduce costs and every taken measure would be more efficient.
