Topic: Technology. Learning to use a smartphone

Situation / Task / Problem to solve: In a Department store electronics shop, an elderly person asks to be explained all the functions that she heard the smartphone she got as a birthday present has. The lady doesn’t understand most of what the assistant says.

Points to mention / Points to raise / Points to tackle by candidates:

• The lady explains what she needs.
• The problems for the assistant are 1) The lady is ignorant of technical terms 2) She has no idea of what the use of the gadget for the Internet is.
• The assistant realizes that he has to limit his explanations to the functions that the lady is expecting to find on her phone: making and receiving calls. He shows her the Messages function as well and she even gets to understand how to make pictures with her new toy.
