Use of Money for Community Improvements, by Susana Torija Herreo (Av2 Tues, 2010-11) - 325 words

The aim of this proposal is to compare the advantages of repairing the roof building with those of installing an elevator, and to suggest which of these would be best.

I have collected the information from neighbours' views on this topic.

Repairing the roof

Most of the interviewed residents thought that repairing the old roof is urgently needed.

One of the main reasons why they support this option is that the highest floors in the building have great stains on the ceiling from leaking water. Moreover, the more the repair is delayed the more difficult it will be to resolve the problem. In addition, we are in June and the summer is the best season because the residents are on holidays.

Installing an elevator

Some of the residents preferred this option and explained why.

On the one hand, the building has eleven floors. Having an elevator would make getting to the higher floors easier. Most of the neighbours who supported this option were elderly people who need appropriate facilities to be able to go out for a walk or do their shopping.

Apart from this, young couples are now part of the community. Most of them have babies so they have a great deal of things to transport like strollers, the baby's bags…

Last but no least, the nearest buildings do not have an elevator which means that if our building had one, this would raise its market value.

Recommendations

Both options have benefits and both are necessary, but we have to lay down some criteria in order to make the right decision, because at the moment there is no money for both. In consequence, as most residents felt that improving the roof would be more useful, I would recommend this.

Eventually, once the community had finished this repair, it should try to install the elevator because there are enough people who need it and because it would improve the quality of life of neighbours.
