A proposal for Improvements in My Student Residence Hall, by Virginia Ponce de la Torre (Av2 Tues, 2010-11) – 300 words

This report contains relevant details concerning the problem of living in a Student Residence. I have been staying in Fernando de los Ríos Student Residence Hall , in Getafe, for the last three years and I think there are some aspects that should be improved. This proposal is also based on observations and the feedback given by other residents.

Cleaning Service
Cleaning is a very important issue when a large group of people live together. Although the common spaces are usually clean, the bedrooms are not: the cleaning service tidies these rooms only once a month. Despite the fact that students should take care of their own space, the cleaning of rooms should be more frequent.

The Dining Room
Almost 400 people have meals at the residence canteen every day. We are all students and we need a healthy diet to give us energy and nutrients in our busy lives. Therefore, cooks should remove chips and junk food and provide us more fresh fish and fruit.

The Gymnasium
Daily exercise is essential to keep a balanced mind. Our gym has only a few metal weights, three mats and two broken bicycles. That is all for 400 residents! Perhaps a treadmill and a couple more bicycles would not be such a bad idea...

Cultural Activities
Entertainment should be an important point to consider. During the course just a few interesting conferences are given and they usually take place at the wrong time. To make matters worse, this residence does not offer other pleasurable activities, such as dancing, chess, sports or language lessons. We all need a break after our student responsibilities and it would be positive if we could have fun with friends in our own place of residence.

I trust the Residence Hall Management will consider this proposal favourably.
