Welcome to Madrid! by Básico 1 (2009-2010)

The unnamed
I live in a city called Madrid. Many tourists come to visit Madrid all year long. I live near Castellana street, where there are interesting museums like Prado or Thyssen. There is a famous street called Gran Via. There is a mosque near the M-30 and a street market called Preciados. There is a famous bridge called Segovia. Santa Ana square is a beautiful place in Madrid. Mayor, the main square, the Royal theatre and Atocha  railway station are top three tourist attractions in Madrid.

Sergio y Almudena
I live in Madrid. Madrid is the capital of Spain. Most tourists come in summer. The most visited tourist areas are downtown.
In Madrid there are many museums and theaters. The most famous museum is the Prado Museum. On Sundays most museums are free but on Mondays the theaters and some museums are closed.
One of the famous streets is Gran Via. This street is 100 years old now.
Madrid has two important squares: Puerta del Sol and the Mayor Square. In Puerta del Sol people celebrate the New Year and they eat 12 grapes to celebrate it. At Christmas, Mayor Square is full of stalls with things to decorate the houses.
Madrid has a famous park, the Retiro Park. In this park people can walk, go out in a boat ride in the lake or watch buskers.
Madrid has many palaces, for example, the Oriente Palace or the Royal Palace. The king doesn’t live in these palaces. The king lives in the Zarzuela Palace.
In front of the Royal Palace is the Almudena Cathedral, patron saint of Madrid, with Saint Isidro.
The most famous department store is El Corte Inglés. El Corte Inglés has many buildings in Madrid. Most buildings are in Preciados Street. In these buildings people can buy many things, like clothes, jewellery, cds, books.
In Madrid there are many hotels. There are some cheap hotels (Carlos I) and expensive hotels (Ritz, Palace).
When you visit Madrid you must visit the Cibeles fountain and the Puerta de Alcalá because they are the most famous monuments of Madrid.
To visit these places, the best thing is to go by underground or on foot, but in Madrid there are many trains and buses too.

From Madrid to the Sky!
We live in Madrid. Madrid is very interesting and we want to give you some tips for tourists.
* In the first place, go to the tourist office and ask for information about Madrid.
* Don’t buy a ticket for each journey. Get a "tourist ticket". You can use it on buses and the underground.
* Go to the museum on a weekday but go to the city centre (streets, parks, pubs, discos) at weekends. Don’t go to museums, for example, on Monday or Sunday afternoon, because they are closed. The shops open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and some Sundays too.
* Use the map for the underground. In winter take an umbrella. In  summer take a hat and the sunglasses (and an umbrella is a good idea too).
